National Highways have informed us of the following major works on the A66:

We’re getting in touch to let you know of some essential safety improvements on the A66 between Snow Gates at Bowes and the Cumbria border. We’re upgrading the central reservation barrier, adding snow poles and upgrading and adding five new no-turning signs in the area. This aims to make the route safer and reduce the number of incidents as well as minimise future disruption.

We’ll begin preparations for the new barrier from Monday 7 April. This will mean daytime single-lane closures to install traffic management.

The barrier upgrades will then begin on Tuesday 22 April, and is due to continue until 8 November 2025.

The central reserve will be upgraded in phases:

  • Phase 1 – Snow Gates to Coach and Horses
  • Phase 2 – Coach and Horses to Cumbrian Border.

Traffic management will be in place 24 hours a day. This will involve:

  • Overnight contraflow of the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways from South Stainmore Road to west of Clint Bridge (over 10.3 km)
  • Closing laybys adjacent to the A66 eastbound carriageway
  • 24-hour lane two closure and narrow lanes with 40mph speed restriction between A66 Cumbria and Bowes.

Temporary speed cameras will be installed on the route during the works.

Access arrangements will remain in place throughout for residents, business and other communities who may be affected by the work.

Please note, this is part of routine maintenance and not part of the A66 North Trans Pennine dualling scheme.
